I'm Jeanne Kuiters,(Jeanne Widdicombe that was!!) Norman Frost's Secretary in the 1950's. I've just read the message from John Daniels down there in Oz. (13/4/2010) Of course I remember you, and even what you used to look like. No doubt you're even more handsome now. I read Roland May's name, I remember him too, and that he was on Traffic. By the way Brian McDowell is my son's godfather - OK OK my son is now 47 and doesn't need Brian anymore - I do, we correspond often and I had WONDERFUL holidays with Claire, his wife. Them were the days!!!!

On the 22nd of June I attended the Bristol Heart Institute where I had open heart surgery for a replacement Aortic valve and three coronary bypasses, the whole of my family were with me and stayed in the Premier Inn quite close to the Hospital. The icing on the cake was when I received visits from my old B Divison and NARPO friends, Mike Mainstone, John and Mary Bailey, and last but not least Charlie Bland. I also had visits from some old personel friends, Gabe Harding, Steve and Jean Flood, and Katie Davies(90 years of age) my landlady whom I lodged with when I joined the job in 1956. These visits made my day, and I have received phone calls from all of them since I returned home, enquiring about my progress. I am improving day by day and Have to return to Bristol onthe 5th of August for my six weeks checkup, How time flys. Thank you NARPO. Bill Lee.

Regarding the helmet plate numbers and divisions. Yes, there were a very limited number of helmet plates bearing "G" Division numbers. I am in possession of helmet plate bearing the number 57"G". I would imagine that this was worn by a traffic man who was performing Mace Escort duty, During the latter part of the war the Mace Escort did not wear ceremonial uniform. This can be seen on page 23 in the book "150 Years Policing of Bristol". Hope this will answer Trevors question Neil Sims. 96"D" 107"F". - I'm grateful for this Niel, and have redesigned the animation. Thanks again - Barry

Hi Pat/Barry. Message for Pete Langley if I may : All those years ago when I was a Probationer and you were assigned to show me round all the beats at Trinity Road, you kept your light under a bushel! Did not know you could croon. Good to see you performing. Do you still get round the car auctions? Look after yourself, will notify Dick Scudamore that you are now a star! Mike Woolley

Hi Pat I've just noticed a case of discrimination on the website!! I notice that the helmet plate in the top right hand corner has a number which changes every few seconds and runs through the old Bristol Divisions from A to E. What about us Traffic (G) men and you ladies (W), and I suppose I'll have to include CID (F) in that as well? Trevor Griffiths 152A , 18G - Hi Trevor - thanks for the observation - you are quite right (not about discrimination though). I have based the animation on the helmet plates (or night badges as I knew them) that I remember were in use during my short service in the Bristol Constabulary (1968 until the takeover in 1974). Now, to my knowledge, I never saw helmet plate with F, G and W but I won't say they never existed. If anyone can enlighten me further please get in touch through this medium and I will update accordingly. As an aside, I am still concious that the image gallery needs to be updated - I'm working on it, honest - Barry

Thought a few old friends, emphasis on the old, would like to see that at 81, I'm still waiting to be discovered. Was asked to perform at a local club, for a charity of the local Hospice [No, I was'nt booking a place] and took my grandson along, who recorded some of my act on his mobile phone. Unfortunately the sound quality is not to clever, and you will see that as I stagger of the stage the legs have gone south for the winter......Boom boom. Anyway if you care to log on to You Tube, in the search space type Lakeside Talent Show, scroll down to Pete Langley sings Frank Sinatra. Enjoy Pete Langley ex 28B, 121D, and many others too numerous to mention. - Ok, Pete, I checked out You Tube and I hope you don't mind, but I have built the video into this website. For those who would like to see it, go to the links page on this website and click the link to the video. Barry

BRIAN/PAT, Whilst not a member of Narpo I occasionally look at your site. I have a number of photographs of Bristol Cadets 1962 era. Would you like to add these in your gallery. Ian Calloway - Thanks Ian - do you have the facility to scan the photos to the highest possible resolution and then email them to me at barry@clearbluewater.info I'm travelling around quite a lot at the moment and can only edit the site when I get internet access, sometimes infrequently - or you could also email Pat directly and arrange something for the future when I'm back. - Barry

Whilst doing a bit of silver surfing this morning I came across a website called www.gertlushonline.co.uk which has an extensive photo collection of old Bristol and some wonderful stories of old Bristol murder cases including some of Police Officers. One is a detailed report of an off duty P.C. murdered by his landlady in Thrissell Street in 1846. The Force was only 10 years old then!! It names various officers involved in the case. Interesting reading for those surfers with time on their hands. John O'C (223A) - Thanks John, by the way email me (barry@clearbluewater.info) with your current email address. Would love to get another cup of tea in while/when we are both back in Bristol - Barry

Ref Glyn of the Central Club. After retirement I worked for Avon Ambulance. I used to take Glyn (see 48) to the Day Unit at Frenchay. He was then blind. We used to have great conversations about the old days. When he was discharged eventually we went for a drink at St George Police Club. Id never been there before.I was quite impressed. How much better than the 1960s. I noticed that the old snooker table (originally at Eastville) was still there. I wondered what happened to it. Graham Voisey ex 157 and 137D

Pat - The Avon and Somerset police have just taken on a new "computer " system named SAP. The latest pensions slip is very confusing and I would suggest that everyone either e mails or writes in to the pension section to geta clear and sensible explanation of the different titles that are there aginast pension payments I would suggest that you might want to put a general alert to all pensioners about this as there could be some serious implications when the new system starts to work out any increases to "basic pension "!!!!! This morning (10/10/09)I was in Kingswood shopping centre and being the gentleman I am, I held open a shop door for an approaching elderley lady who stopped and said "Hello John remember me?" I was stunned to recognize Doreen who used to steward the Central club bar with her husband Glynn. We had a 5 minute chat and I told her that she and Glynn regularly appear in photos donated to our newsletter due to the ammount of Socials,Retirements, etc that were photographed at Central Club. She was very interested and asked if it was possible to get her copies. I said I would speak to Pat at the next social. She sends her regards to all.Sadly Glynn passed away 10 years ago.

Hi, Pat. I'm sad to see that Pat Tippets has died. My first posting as a probationer was to Westbury, where Pat was station officer. He was on the same shift as me, and would sometimes take me aside and give me advice. The many things he told me in those early days (1961) stopped me 'dropping myself in it', many times. Pat was a lovely man. So polite and so gentle. Earlier this year (2009), I met Pat at the 'C' Division 'do'. I know that we often say people don't change. They do, of course. What we mean is that we still recognise them, their faces, their voices, and their personality. For me, there was no mistaking Pat. How long had it been, 40 years? Half a lifetime? But Pat was Pat. I would have singled him out in a crowd. That's what I did, actually. We chatted for an hour. Like all of us, Pat hadn't changed inside. Older and weaker, but still the person I knew all those years ago. We took up conversations we'd had back then, about people and places. I hope this doesn't sound false. If it does, then forgive me for not getting my words right. Pat was special. I know that everyone who knew him will agree with me. Richard (Dick) Whittle, 133 'C'

Re the "Postal scam" warning :- 9 October 2008 A STATEMENT FROM PHONEPAYPLUS ABOUT THE CURRENT ‘POSTAL SCAM' CHAIN EMAIL PhonepayPlus, the phone-paid services regulator, is aware that a chain e-mail about an alleged postal scam is being circulated on the internet. The email refers to the Royal Mail, Trading Standards and ICSTIS (PhonepayPlus' former name). PhonepayPlus appreciates that recipients of the email may want to find out more information about the alleged scam and has therefore issued the following statement: The chain email refers to a service that was shut down by us in December 2005. We subsequently fined the company that was operating the service, Studio Telecom (based in Belize), £10,000. The service is NO LONGER running and has NOT been running since December 2005. You do NOT need to contact us, or the Royal Mail, about this service as it was stopped almost three years ago. If you receive a copy of the email warning you about the alleged scam, please do NOT forward it to others. Instead, please forward this statement from PhonepayPlus. Please go to www.phonepayplus.org.uk/pdfs_news/ConsumerGuide.pdf for useful information about how to recognise phone-paid services and understand what they cost, and some simple tips to help you enjoy using services with confidence. For more detailed information about our work, please visit www.phonepayplus.org.uk. - Although this came from an anonymous source, I have done some checking and can endorse the validity of this message. There are many chain emails doing the rounds, most of the time about such things as this, or about computer viruses of one description or another. They are innocently passed on by well meaning people to their friends etc and the chain continues. I get many, but they stop with me because being a cynical old blighter - can't think where I got it from - I do a bit of checking on the net before letting the originator know that they have been had. The problem is, which are genuine and which are not? Of course it is always best to err on the side of caution. Regretably, criminals etc are finding more and more ways of intruding into our lives. The old adage is - be very careful of opening an email from someone you don't know - certainly never open an attachment to an email from someone you don't know - and be especially careful of following a hyperlink in an email. It may well take you to a web page containing malicious code which could cause harm. Should anyone have any queries regarding simple steps relating to computer security measures, I would be happy to advise. - Barry

I remember a night exercise where the whole column of vehicles was supposed to be following a motorcycle outrider. The roads got narrower and narrower until we finally found ourselves in a famyard - the lead Austin Gypsy had somehow managed to follow the tail light of a little motorbike ridden by a bloke on his way home from work. We had to turn the whole column in a field entrance, one vehicle at a time. We finally turned up at a hanger in an RAF station and were given mugs of hot soup. It took about half an hour to light two huge paraffin pressure floodlights that were then aimed up into the roof to give us light. Then somebody noticed that there were lights up there and went to a box on the wall and switched them on. In the lead-up to going on the column, a certain 'C' Div PC (who later became a dog handler) had been chuffed to bits to discover that he had been selected for a week away on an army sanitation course. He was probably less chuffed to find that when we all went on the night exercise it was his job to dig the latrines. I wasn't with the half of the column that went to Swindon, I was with the Gloucester lot. About 100 men were dumped into the centre of Gloucester and wandered around fairly aimlessly, hoping nothing happened. Happy days... Dick

I too, was one of the 'Volunteers' who part in the Mobile Police Column fiasco in the early 60's. At this distance in time it is hard to recall any particular incident which might raise a laugh. All I can recall is being driven around, seated in a very uncomfortable vehicle with friends like John Carnell and Ivor Lemon. The accomodation was as bad as the vehicles, so all in all, it was a farce and the idea that it could be used in an emergency went the way of many of the tin pot schemes put about to deal with potential threats to national security. I am still in possession of pamphlets circulated at that time regarding the various anticipated emergencies, but I cant describe them, because of the Official Secrets...........Pete Langley.

Hello Dick. You could open a can of worms with this one.I can only recall one Police mobile column in the 1960s,and Bill Whalley was our controller at that time. We collected our vehicles from Devon and Cornwall as they were moved to two Counties at a time.Nodoubt you will recall the little boxes on the wall in the Stations that had to be switched on every morning for us to listen to the voice telling us whether all was clear or we had anything down to a 4 minute warning. I can remember Bill Whalley telling us that if such a warning came the selected few would have to go home, collect their gear and move out of the city with the column and then move back to police the area after the bomb dropped, and I thought What did he think I would be doing with my family before reporting back for duty, then I suppose we are thankful that nothing ever ever happened. However We Did have good time patrolling towns like Swindon for an afternoon, and being dropped off in the wilds to walk to a selected Pub or cafe in a given time, but we were blessed with a Gloucester guy who knew the area and soon scrounged us a lift in a Mothers Pride van and we were there in notime (there were only bread and cakes on board No Flour Colin). I was also called back for court after a night run and Ivor Lemon came to pick me up And I had hoped to have a nap on the way to Bristol(No chance)I can recall lots of stories But this is a family website. Bill Lee . I could have been 64B or 92G at the time

Does anyone apart from me remember the Police Mobile Column back in the early 1960s? (Not you, Pat!). From what I can remember there were two, the first using ex-Civil Defence Vehicles and the second (1965?) using special dark blue Home Office lorries, Austin Gypsies and Triumph bikes. The idea was that in the event of a nuclear attack the Home Office would be able to dump loads of coppers in places that were likely to be looted (ie, in the most radioactive zones). I remember having a lot of laughs. Bill Whalley (then G Div) was one Super, and a Gloucester man was the other. We were based at an RAF station in Compton Bassett. Come on...! FEEDBACK could do with a few laughs. Dick Whittle, Douggie's son-in-law, ex 133C

Hi Pat. I attended the funeral of Dave Curtis ex 91B at Bristol South on Thursday the 23rd,and have been asked by Geraldene, Daves widow to thank everyone who attended to say their farewells, so hopefully I can do this through your website. Well, what a farewell, there was standing room only, I felt I was in a time warp, seeing so many faces with that B Division Rebel glint in there eyes, shaking hands and talking to each other. Daves funeral was carried out to his wishes, and I have to say I have yet to attend such a natural way to say good bye. I was saddened however, not to see the presences of a uniform representing the Force or even the Division, They still do that in my neck of the woods, never mind, the ones that counted were there and I for one was proud to have been one of them. I also worked 'B' Division and 'F' Division in the 60's and if it is him could you let me have his E-mail address, or pass mine onto him. He is right about the Tea Stops they kept us going as well as in some cases helped to solve a few crimes Many Thanks Geoff. Beaven Ex 146B /99F

Dear Retired Officers - I am researching the unsolved murders of June (aged 7) and Royston (aged 5) Sheasby in Stapleton in 1957. I would be most grateful for any information from officers involved in the original search and inquiries in the 1950s, any actions following the revelations by Dr Hyatt Williams in 1964, or any subsequent review of the "cold case". I would also be interested to hear from, or reminiscences about, DCS Melbourne Phillips, Supt. Aubrey Burt (or Birt) and PC Derek (or Jefferson) Brough. Those former colleagues who know me will be aware that I am the bigest critic of the Police Force of today. But today I changed my mind. My wheelchair dependent, widowed daughter lives in the flat below the one where the controlled explosion took place in Westbury on Trym recently. The Constabulary had it organised. I am so impressed I feel I must record my feelings. They had done their homework and all the support services were present and ready. They even had a wheelchair ready for her use. Thankfully she has good neighbours and is safe Doug Reed. Glad the Police show their good side sometimes. Hope Angrla can return home soon. Pat

My name is Mike Tucker, and I now live in Canada. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your gallery of photographs and the tale of the Inspector's bike. I am a former member of Thames Valley Police, having retired in the mid 90's with he rank of DS. A Bristolian by birth, I had numerous relatives who were serving officers. These included Inspector George Locke, who served at Pill and then Redland until retiring in the 1930's, and also Supt. Graham Locke, formerly stationed at Bridewell (?). My early mentor, who taught me how to swim, was PC Albert "Jim" Hodder, of St George Police Station. He unfortunately died young, and I think of him constantly. Small world ! that I bumped into Neil Weaver, fomerly a DC based at Trinity Road, who is also living here now. I shall enjoy checking in on your gallery from time to time, and would also relish exchanging memories with anyone who can remember the names I have mentioned. My address is Mike@ris-ltd.com Welcome Mike - Anyone help? Pat

I did'nt quite know how to deal with your thoughts until I heard of a recent Avon and Somerset flyer which had been delivered impersonally delivered through the letterbox showing photos of local police personnel and how to contact them should they be required. I always supported the philosophy of 'Tea stops' and the way it engendered police and public communication and relations. It was a practice I encouraged with all the staff I worked with right up to the end. Does the institution of the 'Tea stop' still survive - not in my experience. - Happy New Year to you - Barry

I,like many of us was very preturbed to hear that the Government is up to it's old tricks with Police pay again. I have memories of the same sort of behaviour in the 70's before Edmond-Davies,so to show my support for those still not retired I looked at the Federation website to find that they have a pre-prepared letter that could be sent to your own M.P. to lobby for a change of mind on the part of the Government. The only problem was they letter starts " I,as a serving officer..." So I did a cut and paste, ammended it and having found my own M.P.s site sent it directly to Him. Today I got a letter from the House of Commons (thought it was the Knighthood!!) repyling that he sympathised and had already signed the motions to reverse the decision. Not bad as he is a Labour M.P.!! I contacted NARPO H.Q. as well and recieved good support from Clint Elliott. It's up to you but thought some people might want to know!! John O'Connor 223A - Thanks John. NARPO has a dedicated section on pay and pensions on their website .www.narpo.org Then click on pensions. Sorry your knighthood has been delayed . !!! Pat

Barry/Pat, Congratulations on setting up and maintaining this valuable site for us pensioners. May I take this opportunity of wishing you both, plus all members of Bristol NARPO and their families, a fantastic Christmas and a happy and, more importantly, healthy New Year. Although the forum has been quiet of late, it is great to see friends and colleagues of many years standing being mentioned. It brings back many happy and sometimes hilarious memories! Congratulations to Larry Davies for completing the marathon at his advanced age. Wish I could have been there to jeer (sorry cheer) him on ! I will be thinking of past times this festive season from my bolt hole here in the Kingdom of Thailand, where life is rather pleasant. Should anyone wish to contact me for any reason, please do not hesitate to do so at my e-mail address :- expatwoolley@yahoo.co.uk All the very best. Mike Woolley. - Reply - hello Mike, Pat has asked me to reply on behalf of us both. I do so at 11.30pm, 10 December, from the Tenerife Sun Bar, Costa del Silencio, Tenerife on one of my frequent sojourns out here, so please excuse any spelling mistakes as I trype this massage. Pat and I would wish all our readers and contributors a very happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year, (without doubt I shall have to re check this in the morning, but in the meantime, as they say, who cares, someone has to do it!) - Pat & Barry

Barry, Further to item 8 - Bristol Half Marathon on 9th September - just thought I'd update you that I completed the 13.2 miles in a record time (for me anyway) of 2 hours 36 minutes and 4 seconds with a finishing position (cheeky) of 8377. It was a wonderful occasion with so many familiar faces around the circuit offering so much encouragement - which was very much appreciated. I raised about £750 for the nominated Charities and send thanks to all who sponsored my efforts and big raspberries to those who didn't! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all your readers and maybe, just maybe, I may be silly enough to have another 'go' next September... Kindest regards Larry Davies

Just like to say thanks to Pat for the Bristol NARPO newsletter which arrives promptly in my mail box even though I am now living in New Zealand. Nice to see some of the old names popping up. I would like to say Hi ! to anyone old enough to remember me ex 47A 113D and 2059 when they finally stopped playing bingo with the collar numbers. Mike Povey ( ex St George - Central - Trinity rd - Police court cells ) Mike Povey Thank You Mike for your kind words. The newsletter only takes about 4 days to reach you. Takes longer to get round UK !!! How about writing an article on your life in New Zealand.?? Pat

I found a little anecdote on another website recently which I have reproduced on the links page entitled 'The Inspectors Bike'. Click on the pdf icon to view the document. Credit goes to the original website from where it is taken - but who wrote it and should receive the appropriate credit? Does anyone else have any such anecdotal and humorous stories. There must be millions of them. Email them to me at barry@clearbluewater.info and if Pat agrees they're not too near the knuckle, I'll publish them. - Barry

Barry, Glad to see you are 'up and running' again. Reference the appeal for volunteers for the Bristol Half Marathon on 9th September, I'm actually running the 13.2 miles without the aid of a net or zimmer frame (I will be 66 and three quarters on the day) but have already committed to raising sponsorship for other charities, principally The Chidren's Hospice South West. However, if any members of Bristol NARPO, their families and friends would like to sponsor me for the Penny Brohn Cancer Care and/or The Children's Hospice South West, I am sure I will be able to cope with the additional responsibility! Don't forget the additional benefits to the nominated Charity (+28%) by a Gift Aid Declaration. If you would like me to send you a sponsorship form or any other details do contact me at janeandlawrence@btinternet.com - many thanks - Larry Davies.

Reference to the C Div. Gallery photo of the Rocks Rescue practice slope. The P.C. on the left I think was Fred U and the one on the right is me, Mike T, Cons. 139C or at that time I was probably 79'G'. The two with the stretcher I don't recognise. Good to have you back in business, I've missed you. Mike. - Thanks Mike. I will update details in due course. Good to hear from you. - Barry
